In 1964, Mr. A.P. Leonards established this facility
and named it for St. Martin de Porres. Though there is no specific
church affiliation, the life of this Catholic saint serves as an inspiration
for our organization's mission: to provide quality care and services
for those residents not easily accepted by other facilities.

Martin de Porres
was born in Lima, Peru, December 9, 1579, to Don Juan de Porres, a
Spanish knight, and Anna Velazquez, a native of Panama. Martin and
his mother were abandoned by his father, and he was shunned by the
nobility because of his dark skin, but the young Martin distinquished
himself through remarkable deeds of industry, obedience, and humility.
His deep affection for those rejected and abandoned by the world was
most extraordinary, and he eventually became a Dominican lay brother.
Martin's unbounded love for the poor was equaled only by his love
of animals. He even sought to feed and care for those animals others
considered vermin and pests. He visited the hovels of the wretched
and abandoned, and through his efforts, an orphanage was built for
the poor and homeless children of Peru. All Lima called him the "Father
of the Poor."
Martin died on November 3, 1639. He was declared a Blessed Servant
of God in 1837, and in 1962, Pope John XXIII declared him a saint.
His feast day is celebrated on November 5th of each year at the facility.
